kmbs virtual live: myths, reality and participants' feedback
In this article, we bust common myths about distance learning, tell about our new interactive virtual live format and share participants' feedback.

Can distance learning be as effective as classroom training? Having conducted more than 10 programs in a new format, we may confirm this with confidence. In this article, we bust certain existing myths about online learning and tell about virtual live programs offered at Kyiv-Mohyla Business School.

Myth 1: Distance learning is less effective than classroom training

Distance learning can be ineffective if both the organizer and the participant of the learning process have no idea how to take advantage of the format and to avoid classic ‘obstacles’.

Being aware of the way executives think and absorb knowledge, we have combined the best features of the virtual environment with real-time learning and thus have retained the learning efficiency.

Instead of classes recorded in advance by lecturers, studies are held live using video and audio so that everyone could be present, and these combine a lecture with a discussion of the topic in small groups. Thus, program participants better absorb knowledge received, have time to analyze their previous decisions and to learn alternative views on a specific issue.

Myth 2: There is no interactive component in distance learning

In a virtual environment, there are no common standards to be applied to create educational products. Therefore, everyone has different learning experience, and that is not always positive.

In virtual live programs, we focus on live communication with the lecturer, solving cases and presenting completed tasks in small groups. The share of individual work, when participants analyze their company using proposed theoretical frames and receive personal feedback from the lecturer, has also increased.

We also managed to maintain lively discussions in kmbs virtual classroom. Moreover, being in a familiar and comfortable environment at home or in office, executives are more open and active when expressing their opinions during the lesson.

Myth 3: Distance learning means out-of-date and low quality content

The root of this prejudice is the experience of taking online courses, which content is being updated only every few years. Sometimes, videos of classes when a lecturer works with students in a room are offered as a distance learning format.

But as content is one of important components of learning in kmbs, virtual live programs are not just adapted to a distance learning format, but also are significantly improved to take into account the crisis context.

The lecturer's interaction with the group during the lesson has also changed, starting with visual design of presentations, different rhythm of material presentation to increase in the number of illustrative examples and use of gamification.

Myth 4: It is possible to be engaged with other matters simultaneously with distance learning

On the opposite, distance learning requires more time and concentration, especially at the beginning. After all, firstly, knowledge is absorbed in a new and unusual way, and secondly, this format involves a lot of individual work.

As we understand that nowadays it is especially important for executives to be involved in operational activities of their business, participants study in virtual live programs for not more than 3 hours a day. The changed schedule allows to devote the rest of the day to work and other matters. And it is also ideal for active participation in a virtual class and to fully concentrate on the material.

Myth 5: Mastering distance learning tools is a long and difficult process

It is not necessary to have high level of technical training to study in a distant mode. Training on virtual live kmbs programs involves mastering several platforms and digital tools, which our managers present to participants before the program start. We chose them by criteria of usability and user-friendly interface. You will also need a computer, headphones, a webcam and a comfortable workplace to study.

As we understand the need of participants to adapt to new conditions, we have created guidelines for comfortable distance learning. These are both advice on how to effectively learn in a new way and instructions on how to organize the technical aspect of the process.

But the main thing is that our managers are always there during your learning and are ready to help anyone facing technical problems during classes.

Video features have even more participants feedback who have already completed training on virtual live programs in kmbs:
